And right now, we are looking for a recently qualified or experienced part-qualified Assistant Finance Manager to take responsibility for the production and delivery of the internal and external financial reporting requirements of Saga’s businesses. Duties will include the compiling of the Saga Plc Group consolidated monthly management accounts, preparation of the statutory financial statements for the central businesses, and oversight and management of the balance sheets for these entities.

You will be required to manage across the wider team to ensure that sufficiently robust processes, controls, and systems are in place and that group reporting deadlines are met. You will be curious in your approach as to how things work, you’ll seek to improve processes and embrace a culture of continuous improvement and be able to empathise with other finance teams that may have different priorities.

Additionally, you will direct involvement in the Saga Plc Group’s annual and half-year financial reporting, and you will regularly get involved in various finance projects as they arise and provide ongoing support to senior stakeholders across the Finance Department. You will also be lead point of contact with our external auditors throughout the year, playing a pivotal role in facilitating the satisfactory completion of audit requirements.

Role Responsibility

  • Production and delivery of monthly Consolidated Group Management Accounts for the Saga plc Group, ensuring all reporting requirements are achieved and completed within the specified deadlines, using MI, timetables and active collaboration with multiple Finance colleagues in order to facilitate.
  • Oversee and review the Group’s central entity month-end reporting submissions (including performance of detailed balance sheet reviews) to identify and facilitate the investigation and resolution of errors, as well as leading the monthly debriefs with the Finance Director (and half-yearly Saga plc CFO reviews).
  • Production of the Group’s annual subsidiary statutory accounts.
  • Support the production of the consolidated financial statements for the Saga plc Group’s Annual Report and Accounts and Interim Statement.
  • Proactively support the ongoing management and development of the financial control framework for the Group, ensuring adherence to Group policies, procedures and best practice.
  • Support in the delivery of any changes resulting from new IFRS accounting standards or changes to Group accounting policies, including input into any necessary accounting papers for internal and external use.
  • Support in the delivery of new accounting systems.
  • Ongoing maintenance of the underlying data and data structures contained within the business-end of the Group’s consolidation system, including journals, approvals, investment register and nominal structure.
  • Coordinate the timely completion of any balance sheet actions identified.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrable accounting skills with a good understanding of IFRS and UK GAAP.
  • A recently qualified or experienced part-qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA accountant.
  • Experience working in a mid-large accountancy practice, or in the finance function of a large, listed company (1000+ employees) desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships quickly and lead meetings with confidence.
  • Able to identify anomalies or inconsistencies and pursue these through to a resolution.
  • Willing to challenge and work collaboratively with colleagues of all levels to meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Proactive in seeking out and implementing process improvements.
  • High proficiency with Excel and general ledger accounting systems. Previous experience of Workday is desirable, but not essential.
  • A professional approach and a high regard for confidentiality and professional integrity.
