Job Introduction

As an apprenticeship role within Saga the successful applicant will receive formal and a nationally recognised qualification as a software developer once complete. The successful applicant will be supported with formal internal training and exposure

The apprenticeship programme will run for 2 years and will require the successful applicant to complete the 2 year programme. After completion of the programme, salary will be revised to reflect training and experience.  80% of the successful applicants role will be spent gaining competency in role whilst the remaining 20% will be spent learning in a formal setting

A great opportunity has arisen for a Information Technology Apprentice specifically working on Java development in the CHMC area of the business. You will be working towards a Level 3 Software Development Technician. 

You will bring a keen interest and knowledge of web and data base technologies including Java and Javascript, .

Role Responsibility

  • To deliver high quality, secure developments that can be deployed quickly and efficiently to the agreed specifications within planned release schedules
  • Troubleshooting, i.e. investigation and resolution of problems reported by users
  • To produce high quality, secure, software and software enhancements as directed, that can be deployed quickly and efficiently, to the agreed specifications, within the agreed timescales
  • Programming of largely pre-analysed requirements for program fixes and system enhancements
  • Limited systems analysis
  • Programming to be in relevant languages as appropriate
  • Unit testing, system testing and user training to be undertaken
  • Assist users with their acceptance testing
  • Assist in the provision of estimates for fixes/enhancements as requested by IT Management
  • Ensure that all work undertaken has been documented on the correct forms with authorising signatures in place before putting the fix/enhancement forward for application to the ‘live’ environment using the Change Management

The Ideal Candidate

Capability, Knowledge and Experience:

The role includes a support network and training to support the successful application in their role but the following items are desirable:

  • Strong mathematical ability is essential for this role
  • Relevant programming knowledge of web and database technologies; Java / JSP, Javascript, CSS, HTML, XML and SQL Server, would be advantageous
  • Experience in software developing, coding or business analyst would be an advantage
  • Understanding of difference between agile and waterfall software development methodologies would be an advantage
  • Full development life cycle understanding would be an advantage
  • Successful applicant must be able to travel across sites and to attend formal training
  • Understanding of web development best practice in terms of coding standards, security, accessibility and usability

Education and Qualifications:

  • Secondary education achieving minimal 6 GCSE's with a minimal Grade C in Math and English.
  • Must not be undertaking another apprenticeship

  • A passion for IT and commitment to learning new skills.
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written), report writing and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail while still being able to view the ‘big picture’.

  • Analytical and a problem solver

  • Initiative, innovative with a good deal of flexibility.
  • Able to work well as part of a team in order to meet departmental objectives
