A great opportunity has arisen for a Java Developer (Systems Consultant 2) to join the Claims IT team.

You will beresponsible for the development and delivery of new functional changes within the claims applications. You will give detailed analysis of user requirements for new systems and the continued maintenance/enhancement of current systems.

You will bring experience of technical project management and development methodologies.Relevant programming knowledge (JAVA, JSP) and a thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and client-side scripting.

Role Responsibility

• Reporting of progress/problems/concerns/issues to IT Management.
• Ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts clearly.
• Any instances of system unavailability for whatever reason to be notified to the IT Manager immediately.
• Undertake business analysis in order to establish business requirements.
• Produce Terms of Reference where applicable.
• Produce feasibility studies and cost/benefit justifications.
• Detailed analysis of user requirements for new systems and the continued maintenance/enhancement of current systems.
• Recommend improvements where appropriate
• Provide advice where alternative solutions exist.
• Provision of estimates for fixes/enhancements/new systems requested by the business.
• Produce Functional Specifications using jargon free language which can be understood by users.
• Give formal presentations where appropriate.
• Produce Technical Specifications where appropriate.
• Systems design.
• Programming in relevant languages as appropriate with adherence to best practice in security, usability and accessibility.
• Unit testing, system testing and user training.
• Assist users with their acceptance testing.
• Ensure that all work undertaken has been documented on the correct forms with authorising signatures in place before putting the fix/enhancement/new system forward for application to the live environment using the Change Management Procedure (Fast Track or Release).
• Work allocation to other members of the team within parameters set down by the Manager.
• Provide regular progress reports to Manager.
• Adhere to Company and Departmental standards.
• Ensure that appropriate levels of documentation are in place.
• Any other duties requested by IT Management.
• There will be project work to complete, which should be done in a professional manner.
• Manage any risks or controls delegated to this position as detailed in the relevant risk registers, in line with the business's risk policy.
• No direct line management responsibilities unless nominated to deputise for the Manager in his absence. Seniority does embrace mentoring new team members. This includes knowledge transfer, provision of advice/guidance and ensuring adherence to standards.

The Ideal Candidate

Capability, Knowledge and Experience:

• Relevant programming knowledge (JAVA, JSP).
• Thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and client-side scripting.
• SQL Server T-SQL/SSIS/DTS would be advantageous.
• Experience of technical project management and development methodologies.
• Systems Analysis and Design knowledge.
• Good database design.
• Understanding of web security, usability, accessibility and general web standards.
• Keeps up to date with industry standards and best practice.

Education and Qualifications:

• Degree level qualification is preferred; however relevant business and/or technical experience would represent an acceptable equivalent.

Personal Characteristics:

• Good analytical, systems design and technical skills.
• Able to communicate wellwith users, team members and managers.
• Good time management.
• Ability to move into other Development or Support Teams and to quickly become effective.
• Ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts clearly.
