We are looking for Java Developers to join our CHMC part of the Saga business based in Southampton.  It’s an exciting time to join.  These roles will focus on our new IT systems that are key to our ability to personalise and target communications to our customers, improve the experience of members for Possibilities, our customers and employees, and achieve operational efficiencies. 

These roles are within our IT department and we are looking at all levels of experience, so don't worry if your skill set doesn't hit all of the below criteria.

You will be responsible for programming of largely pre-analysed requirements for program fixes and system enhancements, unit testing, system testing and user training and assist users with their acceptance testing.

You will bring relevant programming skills and knowledge as well as a thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and client-side scripting.

Role Responsibility

  • You won't have direct line management responsibilities unless nominated to deputise for the Manager in their absence.  You may mentor new team members though, which could include knowledge transfer, provision of advice/guidance and ensuring adherence to standards.
  • Work allocation to other members of the team within parameters set down by the Manager.
  • Provide regular progress reports to Manager.
  • Adhere to Company and Departmental standards.  Recommend improvements where appropriate.
  • Reporting of progress/problems/concerns/issues to IT Management.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts clearly in plain English.
  • Any instances of system unavailability for whatever reason to be notified to the IT Manager immediately.
  • Undertake business analysis in order to establish business requirements.
  • Produce Terms of Reference where applicable.
  • Produce feasibility studies and cost/benefit justifications.
  • Detailed analysis of user requirements for new systems and the continued maintenance/enhancement of current systems.  Provide advice where alternative solutions exist.
  • Provision of estimates for fixes/enhancements/new systems requested by the business.
  • Produce Functional Specifications using jargon free language which can be understood by users.  Give formal presentations where appropriate.
  • Produce Technical Specifications where appropriate.
  • Systems design.
  • Programming in relevant languages as appropriate with adherence to best practice in security, usability and accessibility.
  • Unit testing, system testing and user training.  Assist users with their acceptance testing.
  • Ensure that all work undertaken has been documented on the correct forms with authorising signatures in place before putting the fix/enhancement/new system forward for application to the ‘live’ environment using the Change Management Procedure (Fast Track or Release).
  • Ensure that appropriate levels of documentation are in place.
  • Manage any risks or controls delegated to this position as detailed in the relevant risk registers, in line with the business's risk policy.

The Ideal Candidate

Capability, Knowledge and experience:

  • Relevant programming knowledge (JAVA, JSP).
  • Thorough understanding of HTML, CSS and client-side scripting.
  • SQL Server T-SQL/SSIS/DTS would be advantageous.
  • Experience of technical project management and development methodologies.
  • Systems analysis and sesign knowledge.
  • Good database design skills.
  • Understanding of web security, usability, accessibility and general web standards.
  • Keeps up to date with industry standards and best practice.

Education and qualifications:

  • Degree level qualification is preferred, however relevant business and/or technical experience would also be considered.

Personal Characteristics:

  • Good analytical, systems design and technical skills.
  • Ability to communicate with users, team members and managers.
  • Good time management.
  • Ability to move into other development or support teams and to quickly become effective.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and complex technical concepts clearly in plain English.
