Reporting to the Head of Underwriting & Fraud we are recruiting for an Operational Underwriting Manager to be accountable for AICL’s risk assessment and controls as a final decision maker for daily enquiries to meet all service delivery deadlines.
Leading a team of 4, you will be responsible for the maintenance, monitoring and control of underwriting reports, underwriting guides, and best practice documents. Your day-to-day will include having oversight of the fraud risk controls and ensuring claims discrepancies are fully investigated in line with the underwriting philosophy.
Working predominantly across Home and Motor, you will collaborate with colleagues across Saga including Fraud, Claims, Pricing and Data. You will be able to influence and support others using a combination of sound judgment and technical knowledge.

Role Responsibility
As our Operational Underwriting Manager you will be accountable for the following areas;
- Preparing and reviewing customer outcome dashboard highlighting key risks and successes for visibility at PPAC/trading
- Ensuring SLA compliance and regular reporting with regards MID including MIB relationship.
- Prepare statements on behalf of AICL to meet our regulatory requirements and attend court when required.
- Working with Technical Underwriting Leads/complaints teams with regards interrogating dispute resolution data received.
- Challenging and working in conjunction with FOS expectations. Supporting the FCA and GFSC complaints returns.
- Risk control management through the construction of technical documents including policy wordings, best practice guides and underwriting guides ensuring compliance with industry and regulatory guidelines.
- Develop and control an audit programme with emphasis on improving customer outcomes, reducing referrals and training other departments.
- Work closely with Development and Technical Underwriters to support growth and footprint plans.
- Identify opportunities to improve operating efficiency or effectiveness to reduce claims leakage and provide better customer outcomes.
- Following our Business Code of Conduct and always acting with integrity and due diligence
- To lead and support, as necessary, customer clean up activity arising from incidents, system defects or any other reason, ensuring it is conducted in accordance with internal guidance and has the customer at the heart of any prioritisation and decisions made.
The Ideal Candidate
As our new Operational Underwriting Manager, we are looking for someone who is commercially aware with a blend of both underwriting experience, and the ability to manage and develop others:
Whilst Home and Motor personal lines experience is desirable, we are open to candidates with underwriting experience across the wider insurance industry.
You will need to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Expert knowledge of risk controls especially fraud, customer outcomes and vulnerable customers
- Detailed knowledge of policy wording construction
- Good understanding of the various distribution channels and brokers
- Ability to identify and anticipate potential business risks/opportunities using market awareness and internal knowledge
- Detailed knowledge of the regulatory and legal framework which the market operates
- Awareness of Polaris and Radar systems
- Good numerical and statistical capabilities
- Ability to influence using sound judgement and technical knowledge
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all levels up to ELT
- Self-motivation and organisational skills
- Degree level education or equivalent, ideally in a business discipline such as ACII
- Trading mentality
