QA Technical Lead

Job Introduction

This role is integrated within SID and the project team currently developing the insurance platform for Saga Services.  In the longer term becoming part of the SSL Change Delivery Unit.

In this role, you’ll work collaboratively with your line manager – The SID Principle Test & Release Manager an Programme Director, Technical Programme Director, IT Leads, and testers to deploy and operate systems whilst defining and guiding the implementation of technical testing and operating best practice.

You will have a strong technical background, with a strong knowledge in object-orientated programming, automation frameworks and testing strategies, allowing you to take ownership of the more technical areas of testing throughout the programme as well as mentoring and developing members of the testing team. Providing them with solutions to enable them to do their job to its full potential as well as managing the regression suite and performance testing; producing reports for the programme directors and wider programme.

You will be expected to design novel solutions to complex automation problems and streamline processes and practices that can be used across the programme and business generally

Role Responsibility

In this role you will have responsibility for:

  • Designing, building, implementing and maintaining the automation framework, testing strategies and implementation of scalable, dynamic automation solutions to support the testing team and wider programme
  • Demonstrating leadership by offering guidance; teaching and mentoring the testing team; removing obstacles to allow them to work at their full potential and advancing their skills
  • Developing software automation solutions through languages including, though not limited to: Java, C#, Gosu, Groovy, SQL, JavaScript, as well as the Selenium and WebDriver APIs
  • Ownership of technical testing solutions, including but not limited to; CTI applications, performance testing, systems integration testing, automated document testing and customer migration testing
  • Building, running and maintaining the automated regression test suites and producing reports used by the wider programme to identify problematic areas and defective system functionalities
  • Attend sprint planning and user story discussions to advise test strategies, clarify acceptance criteria, provide solutions and refine task estimates to aid testing capacity for the wider programme
  • Continually developing internal best practices in the use of frameworks, testing tools, selected automation software, acceptance criteria and reporting to ensure quality
  • Support the delivery of solutions to issues with the testing tool suite and ensure any technical issues the QA team has are escalated appropriately providing agreed solutions to these as necessary
  • Acting as a key referral point for support to the QA team, QA management, programme director and the wider programme
  • Preparing quality documentation and reports as directed by collecting, analysing and interpreting information and trends including failed processes, stability studies, corrective actions, and re-validations
  • Reviewing each script and test plan for every member of the testing team, to ensure quality is high, consistent, the correct test approach is utilised and that best practices are followed
  • Coaching members of the testing team when estimates are high or script quality is low, further escalating concerns to the testing management team

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong programming knowledge in languages including but not limited to Java, Groovy, Gosu, C#, SQL, and JavaScript with the ability to learn other languages as and when required
  • Experience in creating, administering, and maintaining SQL Server databases and SQL queries to extract data to be utilised for testing
  • Extensive understanding of Source Code Control systems such as Git, experience in conflict resolution through Diff-Merge software, as well as GUI frontends such as Sourcetree
  • Extensive knowledge of performance testing through Apache JMeter; including the implementation, maintenance, building of datasets and interpretation of statistical results
  • Understanding of Agile methodology, including BDD practices such as acceptance criteria, Given-When-Then statements, Unit, QA and acceptance testing.
  • Experience for automating SOAP and REST Web Services, constructing requests, parsing and validating responses using XML and JSON data structures
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of using regular expressions to match complex patterns in sets of data. Understanding of CSS, XPath, and JSONpath selectors to query elements within a webpage
  • Ability to mentor and develop the testing team
