…And right now, we are looking for a Solicitor in our Group Professional Services part of our insurance business at an exciting time in Saga’s history. As a Group, Saga is taking to the seas in our brand new, luxury cruise ships and leading the market with innovative insurance and financial products. 

You will be responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and regulatory support to colleagues across the Saga Group in relation to a broad range of legal matters. To support the growth of the Saga Group ensuring the delivery of a first class commercial and legal service in a dynamic, competitive, and ever evolving business environment.

Role Responsibility


  • Providing legal advice and support in relation to a broad range of legal issues, working with colleagues at all levels across the business, with a particular emphasis on legal advice, solutions, and support in relation to issues that have a broad impact on the business.  

  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.  

  • Providing advice in relation to customer documentation and complaints.  

  • Providing legal support to projects as and when required.  

  • Influencing and encouraging the business to take account of legal and reputational risk.  

  • Drafting, reviewing, providing guidance, and training on and ensuring compliance with internal Saga legal policies.   

  • Working collaboratively with other members of the legal team, other departments, the wider business, and subsidiaries in providing a fully integrated service across the Saga Group.  

  • Effectively managing external counsel to ensure that a cost effective and high-quality service is delivered within the agreed budget.  

  • Effectively managing relationships with key stakeholders, including legal colleagues, businesses and Group functions and key suppliers.  

  • Ensuring legal knowledge and awareness of industry developments remain up to date in terms of current and planned legislative changes and relevant parts of the business are advised accordingly with any relevant actions taken to ensure continued legal compliance for Saga Group.  

  • Providing training to and sharing knowledge with the Saga Group Legal Team as well as the relevant business areas on legal issues and areas of interest.  

  • Effectively prioritising work matters and participation at relevant business meetings.  

  • Recommending process improvements.  

  • Networking at legal industry events.  

  • Case and Transaction Management 

Under the supervision of a Head of Legal or Senior Solicitor:  

  • Attending meetings with business colleagues  

  • Gaining a clear understanding of client expectations and requirements ensuring instructions are obtained or confirmed.  

  • Assessing and analysing legal problems.  

  • Conducting or sourcing relevant legal research.  

  • Successfully delivering transactional goals.  

  • Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the instruction, if relevant.  

  • Maintaining utmost confidentiality.  

  • Challenging business colleagues, where appropriate.  


  • Participating in a twice-yearly self-appraisal, maintaining an individual development, and training log.  

  • Maintaining electronic work matter files and reporting logs.  

  • Following administrative systems and procedures.  


  • Gain the requisite competency in the skill standards, commensurate with a solicitor of the same standing. 

The Ideal Candidate

Education and Qualifications: 

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister. 

  • Demonstrated a good academic record, having preferably obtained a 2:1 degree or higher at university. 

  • Other relevant post-graduate qualifications useful, for example CII. 

  • Maintain CPD to support professional status and business need. 

 Personal Characteristics: 

  • Strong interpersonal skills required to communicate clearly, precisely, and appropriately, both orally and in writing with other parties, at all levels, whilst maintaining excellent working relationships. 

  • Confident and able to negotiate with clients and other professionals to secure a desired outcome. 

  • Ability to prioritise work matters and deal with a few works matters simultaneously, and usually under pressure and to tight deadlines. 

  • Maintain highest possible professional and ethical standards, act with unyielding integrity. 

  • Dedicated team player, “can do” attitude.

Capability, Knowledge, and Experience: 

  • A qualified solicitor, barrister, or international equivalent, preferably with requisite in-house experience. 

  • Play a full role within the Saga Group Legal Team and be able to manage a full and varied workload under the direction of the Manager. 

  • Excellent literacy and reasonable numeracy skills together with a competent and confident level of understanding of Microsoft Software packages and Share Point. 

  • Strong commercial acumen is essential.
